Hastings is a large neighbourhood located on the northern part of Vancouver. The boundaries of Hastings are the Burrard inlet to the north, Hastings St. to the south, Venables St. to the west, and Nanaimo St. to the east.
East of downtown, Hastings is an older family neighbourhood known for its old-fashioned delis and bakeries. Lots of family entertainment nearby too: in winter, it’s home to the Vancouver Giants; in summer, the Pacific National Exhibition and Playland keep things fun. Downtown life is slowly making it’s way further east, with new restaurants (Tacofino, Bistro Wagon Rouge, etc), bars (and tons of breweries) and shops opening up as younger people continue to populate this area.
Most of the Hastings neighbourhood Real Estate isn’t found near Hastings Street, rather in Vancouver Heights, the area north of Hastings and east of Semlin Drive (near the port). You’ll find older low rise condos and some single family houses. Given the Vancouver Heights location, many of the top floor units and units on the northern edge of the area can have some pretty phenomenal views of the mountains. Otherwise, most of Hastings real estate is found east of Strathcona and north of Grandview-Commercial Drive. With the continued improvement of the Hastings and Hastings East (The East Village) area, you’re no longer far from restaurants, shops and community amenities, which is great because the Skytrain and Canada Line doesn’t reach this area of town, so you’re limited to driving and biking. With easy driving access to Burnaby and Highway 1 (off Hastings), many people will choose to live here for that reason.
The condos in Vancouver Heights are priced around $200k and above. There are quite a few poorly built and maintained buildings in this area, so due diligence is necessary here. Also, consider how much the noise from the port and train tracks would affect your enjoyment of the area. If it doesn’t, you could be getting a great deal on a home. There are a few newer condo developments on Hastings Street as well. Expect to see many more developments in the next few years as developers that own land in this area work with the city to change the zoning laws to allow them to build a mid-high rise building. The houses along Wall St are quite pricey thanks to the unobstructed views (location location location) but the prices can vary in the neighbourhood as you get further east.
