Fun Events in East Van

So it’s the long weekend, and you don’t have a cottage to to go. Not to worry, there’s a ton of good events happening in East Vancouver this weekend for a good time and for family time.

Dinner & a Movie… and a Drink!

The Rio Theatre in Grandview, just off Commercial Drive (at Broadway) is playing Back to the Future on Friday night at 11pm. Keep in mind that the Rio has a liquor license, so you can head back to the future with a drink in hand, and keep that Friday Afternoon Patio Buzz going right through the evening.  Have a some dinner and drinks on Commercial Drive beforehand – try Lombardo’s for their delicious pizza or Biercraft for some tapas (and beer to match!).

The Powell Street Festival

It’s the 37th Annual Powell Street Festival. Celebrating Japanese Culture and History in Vancouver, this festival is located at a few locations, including Oppenheimer Park and the Vancouver Buddhist Temple and includes performances, music, readings, marketplaces, kids fun, good food and block parties. Check out the entire schedule online. Great thing is every event is free.

Feel like something else? Well a couple BIG events are going on outside of East Van.

Vancouver’s Pride Weekend

One of the biggest Pride Festivals in Canada hosted by the Vancouver Pride Society, located in the heart of Davie Village around Denman and Davie in the West End. Tons of events celebrating gay culture – both day and night – including the famous Pride Parade. Check out the Pride schedule for everything that’s going on and join in the fun. The West End will be packed and believe me, you’re better off leaving the car at home.

Jamcouver 2013

Saturday at Sunset Beach (also in the West End, just west of the Burrard Bridge) is Jamcouver – a day long event where you can watch 60 top skateboarders compete in a contest for $100,000. This is the “Pacific Northwest’s Quintessential Skateboard contest”. The event runs from 10am – 7 pm on Saturday August 3, this should be fun, but keep in mind it’s also Pride Weekend and a very popular event happening at English Bay that night..

Celebration of Light aka The Fireworks!

This Saturday Aug 3 Celebration of Light is Thailand’s turn to light up the skies with a Fireworks show! Starts at 10pm on Saturday night, and lasts a good 20-30 minutes. Grab your spot by English Bay, a roof top patio, Kitsilano Beach, a boat (lucky!) or a secret spot where you can see the sky above English Bay.
