New Development near Main St – A Rental Building

The Duke at Kingsway and East 11th Ave in Mount Pleasant

Mount Pleasant will soon see a new development in its skyline, though this tower will be solely rental units with ground floor commercial space. This rental tower has been in the works for a long time now, with issues pertaining to its height, design and usage. With The Independent slated to be the tallest tower in Mount Pleasant, The Duke will be a close second. It’s an interesting design, with bright colours and space for a public art project. Given its size and prominent location, it’s sure to change the landscape of Mount Pleasant. This area still has a number of ways in which it can change including the likely redevelopment of Kingsgate Mall (last I heard it was slated to be a bigger commercial/office building – think Whole Foods) and a potential Skytrain station nearby.

Built by Edgar Development, The Duke will offer 201 new rental units – a mix of studios, one bedroom units and two bedroom units. Construction started in June 2015 with completion estimated to be in 2017. The building will be a 14 storey LEED Gold concrete development. If you drive by the site, you’ll see the sign boards and construction in action.
