The Future of False Creek

Vancouver’s False Creek neighbourhood is in the midst of a few massive changes, all years in the making and still quite a few years away from being completed. The area will see a mix of new traffic flow thanks to the removal of the Georgia Viaduct, addition of a condo community on the Northeast side of False Creek (in what’s now the Concord Parking Lot), addition of the new St Paul’s Hospital and addition of new transit/industrial/residential/commercial space in the False Creek Flats off Great Northern Way.

Many of the plans we’ve seen are still only proposed, so there could be quite a few changes before the plans are officially accepted, but it gives you a good idea of what might be to come.

Future Plans for the North East False Creek

Concord Pacific Development has owned the large parking lot (currently used as parking, garden space and outdoor event space) on the Northeast side of False Creek, just east of BC Place, for years. They have finally released a proposed plan for their vision of the area, which includes condo buildings, amenities, restaurants, and more. With the City’s decision to remove the Georgia Viaducts, the area will have a different flow and added park and event space. It’s a MASSIVE project that will take years to build (traffic will be horrible for awhile) but the final product should be an area that makes the most of the waterfront location and maintaining access to downtown, Strathcona, and more.

Future Plans for St Paul’s Hospital

St Paul’s Hospital has been approved to move from it’s long time Burrard St location to Strathcona, in the large parking lot near Pacific Central Train Station. The new Hospital will be a beacon of modern hospital construction, and will certainly provide a new injection of activity in the neighbourhood, with Doctors, Nurses, Patients and Family Members looking to rent or buy homes, enjoy the park spaces and have a bite to eat.

Future Plans for the False Creek Flats

The False Creek Flats is an area I’m excited about, with new proposals for industrial, commercial and residential spaces, with a focus on the artist community. There will be a new Skytrain Station that is part of the new line extending from VCC-Clark to Arbutus (not officially confirmed yet, but it should happen). The City of Vancouver owns and is developing an Innovation Hub to support the new Emily Carr Art + Design and the Centre for Digital Media.

There are some exciting things to look forward too…. after the years (!) of construction we’ll have to endure. All in all it’s a step forward for the city! Stay tuned for more information.
